  • 29 December 2011 - Students from the Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do schools in Camborne, HMS Seahawk (RNAS Culdrose), Newquay and Truro took to the beach for their annual 'blow out the cobwebs' Christmas training session. The martial artists were joined by numerous dog walkers and surfers on Newquay's Towan Beach on Tuesday 27th December as they displayed Tae Kwon-Do's impressive range of hand and kicking techniques. And following the tradition of previous years, the session ended in the sea, with students dodging the surfers to take their Christmas dip!

    Liam Broderick, who organised this event states, 'this is the 25th year that we've held this special training session in Newquay and I would like to congratulate everyone that took part on their courageous spirit as they braved the winter weather and rough seas! This is the end to a particularly successful year for the Global Tae Kwon-Do International schools in Cornwall, with students gaining lots of new belts and winning many trophies at local and national competitions but more importantly they have raised over £1,400 for the Help for Heroes and Children in Need charities, a superb effort! As we go into 2012 we are looking forward to another great year and are very excited about Olympic Tae Kwon-Do coming to the UK for the first time. I would like to wish our students and supporters a Happy New Year and look forward to meeting lots of new beginners in January 2012!'

    Cornwall Tae Kwon-Do offers free training for the whole of January. For details please contact Liam Broderick on 07855 734984 or visit www.cornwall-taekwondo.com or Cornwall Taekwondo on Facebook.

 GTI British Open 2011
Regarding the recent GTI British championships held in Cheltenham on Sunday 13th November 2011.

I would like to say many thanks for the well run tournament, especially to all the corner judges and referees.
It’s refreshing to attend a TKD tournament or any other kind of tournament without there being bias to outsiders who attend.

With this in mind and on behalf of me, my students and my spectators please pass this on to all the people concerned.

Many thanks;
Yours in Taekwon-Do
Master Ron Thomas President of the Taekwondo Association Europe

We have pleasure in inviting you and your students to our GTI British Open Championships in Cheltenham on Sunday 13th November. This will be held at the Leisure @ Cheltenham venue with a 9.30a.m. start. Please see the attached poster for costs and full venue details. Download and print poster for your school noticeboards

Competition Categories
As normal there will be both point-stop and continuous sparring categories, patterns, and board breaking. The jumping high front kick competition will also be making a return.

Point-Stop Rule Change
Please remind any competitors and officials about the following rule changes in point-stop sparring that were introduced at the last competition. The continuous sparring rules of "Travelling" (i.e. Stepping out of Area: one- point deduction every second occasion the competitor’s foot goes wholly outside the line) and a one- point deduction for each "Loss of Balance" will now also apply to point-stop sparring.

We Need Your Support
As always we need your ongoing support to provide an ample number of officials to ensure the day runs smoothly, so please encourage any officials in your School to attend. If you have any black belts or senior coloured belt grades who aren't yet a trainee or qualified official but would like to assist then they would be most welcome. There are plenty of non-officiating tasks with which they can help and this in turn frees up officials to get on with the judging. For more information contact tournaments©gti-taekwondo.com
